This is somewhat analogous to what happens when using Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) on Windows: CRU lets you define custom modes and resolutions that your monitor may or may not actually support. On a desktop GPU/monitor combo with robust driver support, these custom modes are recognized and work as expected. But on embedded hardware with stricter EDID and driver handling, trying to “force” unsupported modes leads to black screens or instability.
